Chiefs Travel to Denver as Broncos Look to Play Spoiler in Week 18

Game Preview:

The Denver Broncos will play the Kansas City Chiefs on Saturday, January 8th in the first ever Week 18 in NFL regular season history. They meet in Denver in a 2:30 matchup that could end up being very important to the Chiefs.

Denver goes into the game already knowing they are out of the playoffs. This game is more for draft position, currently the 11th pick in the draft, or for coaches and players auditioning to stay or draw interest from other teams. That is very true when it comes to Head Coach Vic Fangio who may coach his final game for the Broncos, and this game could determine his future. Drew Lock also falls into this list. It seems clear Denver will be looking at an upgrade at Quarterback next offseason, so Drew may be auditioning for another team to take a chance on him or hoping the Broncos will keep him around for next season.

This game means a lot more for this season for the Chiefs. They are playing for a potential shot at the #1 seed in the AFC. That is huge in todays NFL. Now, the only teams that gets bye weeks in the playoffs are the #1 seeds. That and getting to play every game at home is a big reason to take this game more serious than one would think.

The Chiefs are coming into the game very healthy. The only new injury is Starting Running-back Clyde Edwards-Helaire is out, but the Chiefs run so little it is not like they are missing too much there. Denver however, while they are getting a lot of guys back from Covid-19 protocols, they are shutting down Starting Cornerbacks Patrick Surtain II and Ronald Darby, as well as Starting Guard Dalton Risner. Kareem Jackson was also shut down this week. That means Denver will be starting young or inexperienced players at very key positions this week in a must win game for the Chiefs.

We have never seen a 17th regular season game before and that offer a lot of fascinating storylines and matchups. Fans may not love it especially if their teams have been eliminated for a while, but better must love the opportunity to get more impactful games to take bets on and this game offers a way to get some easy layups for some bets.

Betting Information via PointsBet 1/7/2022:

Spread: KC -10.5 DEN +10.5 -110

Total: over/under 44.5 KC -115/DEN -105

Moneyline: KC -551 DEN +400

My Picks:

I have a big nine game Parlay this week and part of it involves this game. I took the Chiefs covering the spread earlier this week when it was at -11.5 for the Chiefs, now it’s an easy bet in my opinion. I have the Chiefs winning this game because I think they’ll play their starters for a chance at the #1 seed, and I would absolutely take the points too. This game should be a blowout for the Chiefs.

Following that side of the game, I would also take the over on Mahomes passing yards with no Edwards-Helaire at RB, in a big game I expect Mahomes to take advantage of a banged up secondary in Denver. I would also expect him to hit the over in passing touchdowns.

Drew Lock looked better after having a full week of practice as the starting QB, and he is getting more of his offensive weapons. In a game where he is going to take this seriously and may be auditioning for a new team next year possibly, I like him taking shots, trying to make plays, and I would take the over on his passing yards because of it. Unfortunately, I would also take the over on turnovers since the Chiefs defense has played better as of late and will be looking to win and make a statement going into the playoffs.

Usually, the Broncos tend to make Mahomes play his worst games. Unfortunately for Denver this week they are banged up everywhere on defense, Vic is potentially coaching his last game in Denver, and the Chiefs are playing for a chance at the #1 seed. Given all of that, if you want a fun Same Game Parlay, I would take a lot of Chiefs players and bets in this game as I expect this to not be a close game at all.
