Valero Texas Open Golf Betting Preview

With The Masters looming next week, the Denver Sports Betting crew will have plenty of content on the way. Until then, there’s one more tournament to be played and one more spot to be given out for an appearance in golf’s first major of the year. The winner of the Valero Texas Open will be given an automatic bid to compete at Augusta.

While that is the case, I don’t see the winner being a guy who isn’t already in the field at The Masters.

For this week’s tournament, the wind is going to play a factor for sure, as this typically plays as one of the harder courses on tour due to conditions. Based on combined scores over par, TPC San Antonio ranks at the top of the board for most difficult on the PGA Tour.

Another course that ranks near the top is PGA National, which just recently hosted the Honda Classic and was won by Matt Jones, who ousted the field by a five-stroke margin. Brandon Hagy finished in second place at 7-under par and then there was a five-way tie at 6-under par.

Corey Conners, one of the premier ball strikers in the world, is the defending champion, winning the last playing of the Texas Open at 20-under par. Charley Hoffman and Ryan Moore finished second and third behind Conners.

So with the course having the tendency to play tough but also offering birdie opportunities as seen by the 20-under showing out of Conners, there’s plenty of guys to look at this week.

Here are my favorite bets of the week, odds courtesy of SuperBook.

Charley Hoffman +3000 to win, +600 to finish Top 5, +275 to finish Top 10:

Hoffman has a great track record here, most recently with a second-place finish. He’s also in good form with three Top 20 finishes in his last five starts. Look for Hoffman to continue his dominance here, which consists of 10-for-10 made cuts, a win and eight Top 15s.

Corey Conners +110 to finish Top 20:

The defending champion has been the best golfer in the world that nobody seems to want to talk about. Conners is coming off a 7th place finish at THE Players Championship and a 3rd place finish at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Over his last eight starts, Conners has finished Top 10 in four of them. Take the safer bet with Conners to finish T20.

Ryan Palmer +130 to Finish Top 20:

With four T10 finishes at TPC San Antonio, Palmer is another guy similar to Hoffman that you don’t want to fade this week. With nine made cuts in 10 appearances this season, Palmer is one of the more steady guys to rely on. Coming off a 17th place finish at THE Players Championship, Palmer is a great bet to have a solid showing this week.
