Jorge Masvidal plans to bet big on himself at UFC 251

UFC 251 on Fight Island is just days away, and the late addition of Jorge Masvidal to the card is sure to bring some extra juice to tv sets and sportsbooks around the country.

Masvidal is one of the most popular fighters in the UFC for his brutal fighting style and relentless trash talk leading up to his bouts. He fought three times in 2019 and now will step up on a week’s notice for a title fight against Welterweight champion Kamaru Usman.

Masvidal was the UFC’s original choice for the UFC 251 main event, but after negotiations fell apart due to financial reasons, the UFC pivoted and ended up booking Gilbert Burns instead.

Burns tested positive for COVID-19 last week, which forced the UFC to scrap the fight and return to the negotiating table with Masvidal. The two sides managed to come to an agreement, and now here we are, anxiously awaiting what could be the best card of the year.

UFC 251 will kickoff three events in a row on Fight Island, which is located on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

Masvidal is +210 underdog versus the champ, and oddsmakers everywhere have “Gambred” as a significant underdog given the quick turnaround and unique set of circumstances in place for the event.

That said, Masvidal is clearly confident in his ability to defeat Usman on short notice because the veteran told ESPN he plans to bet on himself come Saturday.

“It’s getting-paid time,” Masvidal told ESPN. “I gamble on myself. Shout out to those oddsmakers. I appreciate this payday. Thank you.”

It’s unknown how much Masvidal will bet on himself, but he will certainly look to add to the six-figure payday he has coming his way.

The bout between Usman and Masvidal is one of three title fights scheduled for UFC 251. The card is jam-packed with talent and, on paper, is probably the best card of the year.

UFC 251 is going to be an epic MMA event. I think this will be an all time high for sports betting. Denver Colorado has legal sports betting and think there’s going to be a lot of bets made.
