When the MLS returns, the league will become the first professional, team-based sport to resume play in North America since the COVID-19 pandemic started stateside in mid-march.
Tournaments and professional soccer go hand in hand. The MLS is Back Tournament, will follow a format similar to the other major soccer tournaments around the world.
Tournament structure, per ESPN:
- All 26 MLS clubs participating; all matches in Orlando
- Group stage followed by knockout rounds
- Group stage counts toward regular season
- Winner earns 2021 Concacaf Champions League spot
- Pre-tournament draw to assign groups
- Regular season continues after tournament
The MLS has an extensive health protocol that addresses all aspects of how the tournament will be handled from initial player testing to if someone were to test positive for COVID-19 while on property. Check it out here.
All games will be held without fans and streamed across MLS broadcast partner networks. The broadcasts will “feature experimental technologies, including interactive fan elements and unprecedented access to players and coaches, to create a unique experience for viewers.” per ESPN.
The tournament promises to be a whole lot of chaos since there will be games played all throughout most days. This will be great for anybody looking to get involved with sports betting. Soccer is not as popular in the United States as it is around the globe. Still, the return of the MLS will allow sports bettors to wager on a familiar sport again, as opposed to table tennis or some of the other exotic sports.
